Paddling the Tay river is wonderful. I’m an old whitewater dog. The Tay, however, has it’s perfect blend of whitewater and flatwater. It’s a scenic wonder, and a family paddlers’ dream, as well as a beginner’s perfect start. Bring ‘em on down.

Hazards, middle portion of this route

The most hazardous places are near the OMYA plant, where one is advised to stay on the shore that is furthest from the plant. They take water from the river and this has been a source of much political wrangling which is still on the burn. The next hazardous places might be the swifts encountered at some bridges. These are small, farm lane access bridges, and in reality, not a problem. They really only are swift water, not rapids or anything. So long as you can point your boat in the channel, you’re o.k.

Then there is the dams in Perth, and ... the golf course. Here one will know the dam is coming because one sees the spritely golfer swooshing by cart or on foot. At this point, stay to the left shore, furthest from the golfers. A consealed access to the shore near the town’s water plant (I think). You could make this your take-out (or your put-in if you don’t have a shuttle).

Another access would be downtown near the Loeb grocery store. The road beside it goes to the river. If you start here, you will have to portage the dams at this park, site of the Stewart Park Festival. Do not go close to these dams. All dams are dangerous, as any veteran whitewater paddler knows. For those who don’t know, it’s sort of a rule that the less rough looking the water is at a dam, the more dangerous it is. Anyway, there’s good reason for bouy lines and the large signs that warn you of danger. Don’t risk it. Any moving water is powerful. After these portages (choose one of the two.
