Where Rural meets Wilderness ...

South-East of world-famous Algonquin Park, Palmerston Highlands is an
island in the Mississippi River, whose
headwaters rise north of Bon Echo Provincial Park, an easy drive away.

With no public lands, and no public water access, the
rugged beauty of this 200 acre island community is accessible by road, over this bridge.

Palmerston Highlands is just east of the hamlet of Snow Road Station,
15 minutes north of highway 7, Sharbot Lake Ontario.

The Mississippi River seeps from the Bon Echo Provincial Park area,
Walt Witman's haunt.
Intermittent lakes speckle its 200 km route to the Ottawa River.

Some fine wilderness stretches are part of its length, and whitewater to the
International scale of Class V can be found in spring.

Tranquil waters exist for much of its length. You'll discover a lifestyle of
fishing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, walking, wilderness skiing, atv trails and more.

Rural in nature, Palmerston Highlands beckons the lover of
the rustic and the rugged to merge with the quiet and serenity of the timberlands.

The seasons gradually change, and you will awaken to a new day, with awe.
Each day, light changes, and shadows dramatize the every day scene of wildlife going about its business; and Adventure Agent, owned and operated by Dave Martin.

The Mississippi rolls on in autumnal beauty and voice. (Notice the icicles?)

Just as wild and beautiful in the winter,
Palmerston Highlands is blessed with marvelous scenery.

Along with a few "common" lots, the Palmerston Highlands Owners Association
maintains the roads that bob and weave among these views, for superb walking or good drives.

Several "common" tracts are mutually owned by all residents and provide not only destinations, but
great places for Palmerston Highlands Owners Association members to launch their canoe, kayak, or small boat, and to swim.

Not heavily trodden, as many public trails can be, private foot paths link throughout the islands, and
footbridges carry you over some obstructions.

The "swimming hole", at the common at the head of the McLaren's Depot Snye, is
accessed by three footbridges, on another small island within the Palmerston Highlands domain.

A Ministry of Natural Resources crew, paddling down the Snye, on a portage maintenance program.
The Mississippi River is a canoe route, because of its beauty, water quality and wilderness sections.

This special place is beautiful throughout all its seasons. Every day is a blessing.
Wildlife of course is at play here, from American Bald Eagles, Green Herons, 5 lined skinks, to wolves and bears.

Winter weather doesn't necessarily preclude paddling activities
at Palmerston Highlands. Learn how to paddle properly first, with
Adventure Agent outfitters. Practice safe paddling.

It isn't all wilderness. Living in Palmerston Highlands is cozy
in winter, with your woodstove hosting a dance of flames.
Colour television never looked so good, and never so warm.

Stocking up for winter's heat is part of the Canadian tradition. If anything, Palmerston Highlands is
Canadian tradition. Note the whitewater kayak helmet and other gear on shed.

It isn't all fall and winter. You'll slide through the seasons alright, but
summer is the favourite time for fun at Palmerston Highlands ...

Paddle down to Smith's Bay and watch the battle between Great Blue Heron and an Osprey,
perchance see a Bald Eagle soaring; hook a lunker smallmouth bass, pickerel or perch.

Just enjoying the paddling trip down the bay is enough. Here you seem removed from all.
It's an Algonquin Park-like area. Mostly private lands. No camping.

There is enough to enjoy in a kayak or canoe. One doesn't rush. One scopes for the
pockets of wilder places within the wilderness, as though a skink might suddenly appear upon the shore.

Or step ashore, amid the hidden golden trails of the mind,
that serpentine wag of thought
stirred by every sight and sound.

Then give thanks ... for your good fortune to find that moment.
You will know why the very trees raise their bows, and
birds raise their eyes and voice ... And sing.
