The Attignawantan (Bear Nation) of the Huron Federation inhabited the area as First Nations peoples from before written history. Among their stories handed down through the generations, is the story of Kitchekewana, who was spurned by the princess Wanakita. In despair, he scooped a handful of earth and threw it into what is now called Georgian Bay. This is how the 30,000 islands were formed. The outline of his resting place formed Giant's Tomb Island.
