PETER TABUNS, TO THE LEGISLATURE, DECEMBER 3, 2007:
“I draw the assembly’s attention to the presence of Donna Dillman in the members gallery.
Today marks day 57 of a hunger strike she has embarked upon as part of the struggle to stop a uranium mine proposal near Shabot Lake. Close to a week ago, she moved this protest to the perimeters of queens park, on behalf of a coalition of eastern Ontarian residents and groups who for months have been calling on the provincial government to take measures against a proposal that is contemptuous of First Nations’ rights, source water protection, plus a harbinger of things to come if the nuclear power lobby succeeds.
To date, the government, through its inaction, has been complicit in the strife this proposal has caused. The Ardoch Algonquin First Nation have repeatedly pointed out that the provincial government has failed consult with them about uranium exploration on their lands.
Communities across eastern Ontario warn how uranium exploration and mining will release contaminants into their drinking water supply, and farmland.
“On the cusp of her one week anniversary at Queen’s Park, Donna ( Dillman ) and eastern Ontarians still are waiting for their provincial government to step in.
Last week, the Premier responded to Donna ( Dillman )’s determination to get action from his administration by saying there was no way he could accept her terms. I quote the Premier “In an ideal world, I would shut down our nuclear generation overnight, but 50 percent of our electricity now comes from nuclear fired generation.” He side stepped how he is no way proceeding with a nuclear phase out of any description. His electricity plan is a nuclear plan, one that will inevitably play a role in precipitating more struggles of this nature down the road. He can anticipate that unless he revisits his nuclear ambitions, more activists like Donna ( Dillman ) will be fixtures in this legislature, fighting for their communities, and a sustainable environment.”

The information provided above relates to the potential development of a Uranium mine at Robertsville Ontario. The Robertsville uranium mine would be developed at Robertsville, near Sharbot Lake, North Frontenac Township, Frontenac County, in Eastern Ontario. Robertsville was one of several small community stops on the Kingston & Pembroke Railway line. Now reliant on tourism and mineral and timber extraction, the Robertsville mine does not bode well for eco tourism, which the County and the Townships have been trying to promote.
