DAVID SUZUKI, RENOWNED SCIENTIST AND EDUCATIONAL PERSONALTIY, REGARDING THE PROSPECT OF A URANIUM MINE IN NORTH FRONTENAC TOWNSHIP IN EASTERN ONTARIO AT ROBERTSVILLE:
"November 27/07
Dear Premier McGuinty,
I know that OPA folks are pushing hard for a nuclear commitment. As you know, I think it’s nuts to embark on such an expensive mega project when there are so many questions from a nuclear option: cost, reliability, security from terrorists, radioactive waste, etc. As the Pembina Inst. study, Renewable (is) Doable, suggests, efficiency and alternatives offer a far more secure, economically positive energy future.
It appears to be that opening up uranium mines are part of the nuclear future but they themselves have a terrible history of leaving a legacy of radioactive pollution.
I know that in Frontenac County, there is potentially a large open pit uranium mine on what is the traditional territory of First Nations people. There is no way those lands should be exploited before settlement of the claims of FN people. I hope this is the government’s plan.
Yours,
David"
