FIRE HAZARDS
The region of North Frontenac, in the region of Land O' Lakes, is wilderness and is largely forest. For that we are very appreciative. Part in
parcel
with that comes the hazard of forest fire.
It is good to remember that in the year 2001 there was a drought. In a land not far away, there
was a
fire. It was in the Canonto area. That is just a few miles from here. So quickly did the fire spread,
and so large was its area, that it required more than just the devoted and incredibly motivated and
committed volunteer firefighter force from the area.
WATER BOMBERS IN OUR
AREA
Crews were flown in from Manitoba. Also called in were the water bombers. When a fire gets this
kind
of opposition, it behooves us to sit back and meditate. Wildfire can move with staggering speed.
Be
aware. Be aware that forest fire doesn't just creep along the forest floor and that it can be just
quickly extinguished with a couple of sprayers and shovels. Instead, it can move faster than a
horse
can run, and it can jump roads and rivers. It can be upon your house in very short order.
GUIDELINES
AVAILABLE
There are guidelines for what you should and should not do near your home, in order to minimize
the risks
of your home burning like kindling. Your fire volunteer is a good source of this information, or
you
can get printed matter from your township office.
Things like parking your vehicle facing the roadway will save confusion and time in a time when
panic
may affect your thinking. It's just one less detail to be processed.
ATTITUDE
As adults, we have had a lot of experiences and they lead us to believe that we can manage things
like
fire. We believe that we wouldn't do anything stupid. We will use caution. We build a "safe"
fire
place. It's on mineral soil, a concrete base, in a steel fire drum, or other such manageable
conditions.
We are over-confident. Fire signs are out on the roads, and they tell us the fire
hazzard.
CRITERIA AND SIGNS
WHEN THE SIGN SAYS "NO FIRES" or "FIRE BAN ON", it means just that. Those signs are adjusted in accordance to a
formula.
They mean no fire at all. It means that someone has assessed all the criteria and determined that
the
conditions are prime for an inferno. If you haven't seen an inferno, perhaps you have seen
someone who
has lived through one. I have. The results aren't worth it. When the signs say "No Fire," or "Fire Ban On" do not
build
one. Just one spark. That's all it takes. One on the breeze. One smouldering ember or spark can
migrate underground
to some remote area and erupt into a blaze even days later at some place where there had been
no fire
built. This is serious business, folks. Let's all comply, and remind our neighbours and our guests.
